A two year old can be moved to a twin bed. Many parents just buy the twin bed and put the mattress on the floor until they are more confident that child won't fall out of bed. Because the floor was cold, my neighbor just sanded a piece of plywood and attached it to 4 concrete blocks, then placed the twin mattress on it. Kid never fell out so got the twin bed about 2 months later. Many grandparents think toddler beds are just a gimmick. I think they are cute though.
