i did this with my son he always wanted to sleep in my bed and even though it was just us two it was still hard, i just went and bought his own bed, even though i had a crib, i got a real bed, and its been about 4 months and he sleeps in it everynight even from the first night.
try rocking him to sleep or waiting until he falls asleep to put him in his bed, that could work too.
good luck hope you get your bed back soon :) it's nice when you do HA
References :
I feel your pain. I’m a single parent that allowed my daughter to sleep in the bed with me until she was 2. She is now 12 and still asks to sleep in her mommy’s bed sometimes. At age one and two she would start out in her bed and in the middle of the night around 2am she would hit that corner so fast and get right in my bed; half the time I don’t even think she woke up for the change in beds. 
It’s going to take time and patients. Your bed has become the safe place. You will need to put him in his bed every night, try reading to him, and then be firm when it’s sleep time. You can’t stay in the room with all the time because he will assume that when ever he cries you will come running and save him. You have to be consistent and follow through. It will not feel good at first but you will accomplish your goal. Also try leaving an article of your clothing in the bed with him. Some say your scents will sooth him and make him think you’re there.

Good luck!
References :
I know I am going to get thumbs down for this but this is one of those time you just have to let him "cry it out"......As was already said, if he fuss's and you let him back into your bed, guess what....he crys....you have to not give in...put him in bed, and keep him there,,,if he gets out, put him back...this might take all night for a few nights...but that is what needs to be done....DO NOT GIVE IN.....That is the reason we did not allow our kids to sleep in our bed....we did not want to have that problem
References :
When our first born was around the same age, he was co-sleeping off and on with us. We grew tired, just like you, of the kicking and thumping. It's amazing how much room a little body can take up!!

We would put him down and rub his back until he got very sleepy in his crib, sometimes I'd sing his favorite song. Then we'd tiptoe out and hold our breathes. It really was just a matter of consistency, putting him back when he woke up alone. Giving him comfort by giving him a lovey or Daddy's/Mommy's shirt. Good luck, you'll all be fine soon! : )
References :
We had to buy a crib tent for our son when he was younger and was able to find his way out.

Technically they're meant to keep cats and animals out, but we were using it to keep him in. He cried a bit at first, but we would've rather deal with that than having him come out. We told him it was a fort and learn to adjust to it over time.
References :
There are really cool toddler beds out there. If you get him one shaped like a race car and tell him he is a big boy now, that might help.
He is going to cry for the first while because he is used to sleeping somewhere else. He'll get used to it.
