Traveling with a toddler on a 4hr roadtrip?
This is my little girl's first trip and I worry about her getting cranky beyond consoling with one hand while driving. Any suggestions?
Ok my daughter is only 14 months. We don't have a DVD player and she doesn't have favorite movies or characters. She doesn't write or draw yet and she doesn't like playing with her toys much.
She does love going through my purse though! I get car sick easily unless I'm driving, but her Daddy can help entertain her.
My son comes on lots of road trips with us and he's usually pretty good if we keep giving him a new activity every hour or so. Felt games are good, his Noddy annual is one of his favourites as it has so many activities in it. Having age-appropriate music is good too – and just be prepared for a lot of chatting…my son is 3.5 and can chat for hours on end.
I don't go for the DVD thing as we'd rather stimulate his mind in other ways, but that's just us. We do let him play with his Leap Pad games though…and he loves that – another great 'on the road' activity.
Have fun and keep juice and fruit handy…that helps too.

What are the requirements for a toddler traveling out of the country?

I just drove 14 hours to Cape Fear, NC from Indiana with my wife and 3 yr old boy. Take it from me, a portable DVD player is worth whatever price you pay. I've seen other toddlers and how energetic they are. I swear mine has ADHD. I believe that if a set of his favorite movies will keep him occupied for 12 of those 14 hours, it will help you.

If your vehicle doesn't have a DVD player in it, buy a portable DVD player. We drove 6hours with my two year old and this really kept her entertained. Also try to make sure she is tired when you leave and she will fall asleep for some of the drive. If there is more than one person going you could also sit in the back with her and read her books or play with her to keep her entertained. Try to stop at least once to get out and let her stretch.

We've been taking our 3 year old on road trips since he was 6 weeks old and he absolutely loves it. We play games and have taught him how to get semi's to honk at him. We do have a portable DVD player, but it rarely gets used because he's so chatty! Make sure to have her favorite books and activities. Also, we pack a trike or a bike with us so that he can get out at rest areas and take a break around every 3 or 4 hours, or whenever he has to use the restroom! Good Luck!

Rest stops! Although you might not want to stop at them…let your little one out and run around for a little bit-supervised of course. Go to your local dollar store and get her a coloring book, drawing paper, and snacks. She will probably end up sleeping for an hour or two, but it is best to have things she can do and get for herself if she gets bored. A portable DVD player also works wonders if you want to invest in one. I would also suggest bringing along kid's music Cd's of her favorite character's or movies. So that way the two of you can sing along the way, and pass the time. A baby doll with a bottle, a telephone, any toys will also distract her on the way will help give you peace of mind. Good luck!
