Crib to bed: How did your toddler deal with it?
Did they cry or love the new bed?
What type of bed – toddler bed? Mattress on the floor, etc.
Did they wander during the night if so, how did you deal with it?
My daughter was awesome! She never tried climbing out of her crib, so I left her in it for quite awhile. We moved into a toddler bed when she was almost 3 1/2 yrs., and I was trying to night time potty train her. I wanted her to be able to get up and go on her own if she had to, and by this age I was comfortable with her being around the stairs and all – she also has never been the kind of child who gets into things and makes messes with things that she shouldn't, so things went well. She has always stayed in bed when she was supposed to, if she has to use the bathroom she gets up and goes, and then goes right back to bed. I've been very lucky with her, she's great and I've never had a problem when it comes to the bed.
ETA – I went to a toddler bed as opposed to a twin bed because it was given to me – no money out of my pocket.

My friends kid learned how to get out of the crib when he was about 4! When he started waking them up in the middle of the night to cartoons they decided to get a real bed. Her theory was if the kid doesn't want the crib anymore, it's time for a big boy bed.

All I remember now (my son will be 16 tomorrow!) is that he was 2 and we went to Wildwood New Jersey for a week with my new man-friend who is now my husband and his 4 yr old daughter. We forgot the portable crib and refused to rent one. He had no choice really (it's better when toddlers and young children aren't given too many options), but to sleep in the real bed. He liked his future step-sister, and I think in the back of his little mind he wanted to impress everyone and be "a big boy now". He slept great that night and there after. As soon as we got home I had to get a real bed for him, which was just a regular twin size bed, nothing fancy like a race car toddler bed. I never had problems or worries of him falling out or wandering. He slept soundly then, it was when he was a baby and wouldn't go to sleep that was my problem. I used to have to run a vacuum in order for him to fall asleep……..IDKW but it worked.

We transitioned my son when he was about 15 months. I wanted to wait a bit longer but he was climbing out of the crib and I was afraid he would hurt himself. He did very well. I took him with me to pick out a bed. We got a toddler bed frame from walmart ($40) and you just use the crib mattress. He helped put it together so I think he felt excited about the process. He did get up at night but only to come in my room. I just put a gate at the top of the stairs and kept the bathroom door shut so he didn't wander in.

for about 2 weeks we had to watch her because she would get out of her toddler bed and try to get into our bed. for us it wasn't a bad experience at all. we just kept putting her back in her bed and would tell her that it was her bed and that's where she needed to sleep and pretty soon she got it!

We did a toddler bed with my son. I wouldn't recommend it though. Not that it didin't work well for him, but just that it is kind of a waste of money. He is 3 and we are looking for a twin bed to put him in now.
So, I would go straight to a twin bed or larger. With my son, we had the bed set up in his room for about 6 months before he started sleeping in it. He would look at it and sit on it, but he wanted to sleep and take his naps in his crib. When he was around 2, he took a nap in the big boy bed and never went back to the crib. We did have issues with him getting out of bed, but we just put a child gate across his door so he couldn't get out. His bedroom was on the second floor and we didn't want him falling down the stairs or anything. Don't force the issue. let your toddler get used to it at their own pace.

Experience
When we moved to my husband's training base the movers lost two pieces of the crib. For a few weeks she was on a full size mattress on the floor. We were worried about her getting up and wandering around, so I just babyproofed the whole room. SUPER babyproofed. Hey–times were hard, we were waiting on the money from the moving company. Anyways, we bought her a toddler bed and she watched me put it together and clapped and squealed. She took right to it. She has a bed canopy and everything.
Wanted to add she was 1 1/2

My son, at 17 months, never stayed in his crib, the problem was that once he got out he couln't get back in, th toddler bed worked wonders for about two weeks, he played in his room until he fell asleep, but loved being able to put himself to bed, then he dicided he was too good for the toddler bed and began sleeping on the floor, we bought him a pad to sleep on. After a few weeks we began putting him back in the toddler bed after he had fallen asleep, but the he moved around so much he would wake up all the time, or fuss in his sleep cuz he kept bonking his head on the headboard or rails. So, we got him a twin bed and he loves it! He still often prefers to fall asleep on the floor in front of the heater vent, but stays asleep in the bed. He does get up and play a bit, but soon gets tired and goes to bed. With the lights out and soft music on it doesn't take long.

Our twin girls transitioned very easily. We bought them two twin beds and we just have the mattresses on the floor. They have fallen out a couple times, but it wasn't a big deal since they were so low to the ground (they are both very restless sleepers). We did the transition when they were 15 months.
